Aldon Company, Inc. Introduces New Railcar Coupler Lock and Sign Holder

Date Posted: July 29, 2016

Aldon Company, Inc., of Waukegan, Illinois, announces an innovative idea for worker safety in rail yards: the new RAILCAR COUPLER LOCK AND SIGN HOLDER.

The company calls it "the ultimate in Blue Flag protection for workers loading or unloading freight cars.”

Aldon’s president, Joe Ornig, relates how the idea for COUPLER LOCK came about, “A customer asked us if there was any way to prevent the theft of a rail car from his yard.

"We first thought of something like the Denver B¬¬oot used by police forces¬¬ to immobilize an automobile,” explains Ornig.

“Then it struck us that if you could prevent a locomotive or other freight car from coupling to the stationary car, you could achieve the same purpose — if you can’t couple to a rail car, you can’t move it very far.”

Aldon’s COUPLER LOCK fits into the standard sign post hold found on all railway couplers, and can be padlocked below.

The middle section, or “cage,” of the COUPLER LOCK sits inside the coupler knuckle.

The COUPLER LOCK cannot be forced off the coupler head.

“If you don’t have the key to the padlock,” says Ornig, “you can’t couple to the car.”

The COUPLER LOCK can carry a 12” x 15” OSHA-mandated Blue Flag sign.

Aldon offers a variety of sign wordings.

The company recommends that both ends of the rail car be equipped with COUPLER LOCKS — to prevent unauthorized movement or theft.
