Fuels America Launches Ad Campaign Urging Obama to Stand Up to Oil Lobby

Date Posted: October 10, 2014

The Fuels America coalition launched a significant digital advertising campaign to highlight the $1.1 billion that Big Oil has spent to rig the political system with lobbyists and campaign cash since 2008, according to the latest data from opensecrets.org.

Oil lobbyists have directed enormous resources toward blocking competition from domestic renewable fuels.

The ads, which are running on news websites such as POLITICO.com, RollCall.com and TheHill.com highlight the oil industry’s effort to rig Congress and campaigns across our country.

They point out that the oil industry has spent over $1,107,000,000 —$961 million lobbying congress, and $146 million in campaign contributions since 2008.

That’s more than $2 million for every member of Congress.

While the oil industry reaped $93 billion in profits last year and continually receives sweetheart tax breaks to the tune of $470 billion<http://oilrigged.com/rigging-tax-code/> and counting, renewable fuels generate $14.5 billion in tax<http://www.fuelsamerica.org/blog/entry/report-shows-renewable-fuels-support-852000-jobs-and-46-billion-in-wages> revenue every year.

Meanwhile, the oil lobby has continued to fight to kill the Renewable Fuel Standard, which would permanently outsource thousands of American jobs and increase our reliance on foreign oil from hostile and unstable regions.

The Fuels America coalition has urged President Obama to resist pressure from the oil lobby and reject an EPA proposal to gut the RFS.

The ads, which will run for the next week, link to a page that breaks down the numbers and invites Americans to join the fight<http://www.fuelsamerica.org/page/s/join-the-fight-against-big-oil> against oil industry efforts to rig the system and block competition from renewable fuels.
