Over the past five years, United States corn exports have dropped from 2.4 to 1.15 billion bushels. The result of this has been a change in global corn production, but the cause of the change has been increased domestic use of corn.
Dr. Philip Abbott, agricultural economist and international trade specialist at Purdue University (765-494-4274)says other nations have begun to increase their own corn production because of the high cost of U.S. corn.
He additionally says as ethanol demand reaches a maximum, any additional corn production would be available for export, but it may be difficult for the U.S. to recapture its original position as the world's top supplier of corn.
