Neogen Releases Easy Roundup Ready Test Kit
Date Posted: December 3, 2001
Lansing, MI (Dec. 3) -- Neogen Corporation, the proven leader in providing grain testing products, announced today that it is releasing an inexpensive, simple and accurate test to detect the Roundup Ready® genetic trait in soybeans and one variety of Roundup Ready corn.
Neogen's new test, Agri-Screen® for CP4 Strip Test, adds to the company's comprehensive line of approximately 200 test kits used for food and animal safety. This is Neogen's fourth GMO test kit, and one of 20 test kits designed especially for grain-based industries. CP4 is an abbreviation for the protein added to crops to make them tolerant to Roundup® herbicides.
Agri-Screen for CP4 Strip Test can detect as little as one Roundup Ready soybean among 1,000 soybeans, or one Roundup Ready NK603 corn kernel among 800 kernels, making Neogen's test the most sensitive CP4 test available. Positive samples can usually be read within 5 minutes on the test's device.
"The release of this test is consistent with our proven history of developing products and programs to ensure purity standards for agricultural applications," said James Herbert, Neogen's president. "While overwhelming evidence exists that Roundup Ready products pose no known risk to food safety, a number of domestic processors and large importers, such as China, require the identification of all genetically modified foods. We are pleased to provide a solution that will make those identifications quick, simple and accurate."
Roundup Ready herbicide resistance has been incorporated into soybean seed used throughout the world. Soybean varieties with this trait were a large percentage of this year's total production in the leading soybean producing countries of the United States and Argentina.
The NK603 variety of corn, planted for the first time this year, also utilized this modification. The test is not valid on the previous variety of Roundup Ready corn, GA21. Both varieties of corn are approved for use in the U.S., but not in Europe.
