UGG Sells Unipork Genetics Division to Monsanto

Date Posted: September 21, 2001

Winnipeg, MB (September 21, 2001)--United Grain Growers Limited (UGG) announced that it has signed a non-binding letter of intent with Monsanto Company whereby certain rights and assets of the Unipork Genetics business unit of UGG would be sold to Monsanto, St. Louis, MO.

Unipork Genetics was established in 1994 as a swine breeding stock production and marketing business to produce and sell JSR Healthbred breeding stock in the four western provinces of Canada under a franchise license from DEKALB CHOICE GENETICS, now a subsidiary of Monsanto.

DEKALB CHOICE GENETICS holds the rights for this breeding stock for North America. Following this transaction, DEKALB CHOICE GENETICS would regain the sole rights for Western Canada.

UGG plans to continue to feature DEKALB CHOICE GENETICS-based breeding stock in its Program 2000 swine production program and in other hog programs connected with its subsidiary feed business, Unifeed Limited.

"The swine breeding stock business is poised to experience major technical changes that can only be effectively implemented by companies having extensive geographic marketing areas and the technical expertise to pursue new technologies," said Bill McGill, livestock services managing director for UGG.

The transaction is conditional upon, among other things, entering into definitive agreements, and other normal closing conditions. Financial terms were not disclosed.
