GEAPS, Purdue University, and Kansas State Offering Ethanol Production Distance-Learning Course

Registration is now open for "Fundamentals of Fuel Ethanol Production," a distance-education course from the Grain Elevator & Processing Society (GEAPS), Purdue University and Kansas State University.

The five-week, 10-lecture course begins March 2 and ends April 3, 2009.

"This course was designed to help professionals who are either new to the fuel-ethanol industry or who want to learn more about the fundamentals of production," said Dr. Dirk Maier, head of the Grain Science and Industry Department at KSU and director of the GEAPS-KSU distance-education partnership.

The course lectures are:

• An introduction to Fuel Ethanol Production and the Ethanol Industry.

• Grain Feedstock for Ethanol Production.

• Feedstock Size Reduction.

• Fundamentals of Starch Chemistry for Ethanol Production.

• Fundamentals of Fermentation.

• Fundamentals of Distillation.

• Production and Type of Spent Grain Co-products.

• Fundamentals of DDGS Drying.

• Co-products quality and logistics.

• Environmental Compliance: Air Quality Related Permits and Issues.

No travel is required to participate in the course, which is taught by Dr. Klein Ileleji of Purdue University.

All that students need is a computer with a CD player and an internet connection.

Students can study, engage in class discussions, or take quizzes when the time is right for them.

The course is "open" 24 hours a day, seven days a week, throughout the five-week period.

Students who complete the course are eligible to receive one continuing education unit from KSU.

Registration for the courses is limited to 50 people.

The cost, which covers all CDs and full access to the course website, is $500 for GEAPS members and $700 for non-members.
