Integrys Energy Services Launches Ecovations Renewable Gas Program to Use Biogas Recovered From Landfills to Offset Natural Gas

Date Posted: October 2, 2008

Columbus, OH—For residents of Ohio who would like to contribute to the sustainability of the environment by using renewable energy in their homes, Integrys Energy Services has launched a new program called Ecovations Renewable Gas.

The Ecovations product is a blend of natural gas and “biogas” at no additional charge to customers.

Integrys Energy Services absorbs the costs of providing a more sustainable natural gas offering, and planting trees in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, in order to make eco-friendly gas available to all consumers without increasing its competitive rates.

“Our customers have told us they want sustainable energy without premium cost or decreased reliability and effectiveness,” said Susanne Buckley, director of regional sales for Integrys Energy Services’ Ohio operations.

“The solution is Ecovations Renewable Gas.

"We are the first energy company to provide a free eco-friendly natural gas option to all consumers, regardless of the price program or offer they enroll in.

"All consumers need to do is choose Integrys Energy Services as their provider and opt for Ecovations gas and we’ll deliver their energy, including a renewable supply, which they’ll see on their normal natural gas bill from their local utility.”

Many recent national polls indicate varying levels of awareness and interest in sustainable or “green” products and services, but agree that consumers weigh the benefits of being more environmentally conscious against the financial costs to their households.

A recent survey of existing Integrys Energy Services’ customers indicated 72 percent would opt for renewable gas if the cost were the same as conventional natural gas.

Twenty-five percent said they would switch to biogas even if it cost more.

The biogas provided by Integrys Energy Services is methane generated from manure digesters, sewage treatment plants and landfill gas wells.

The Ecovations biogas is pipeline quality, equaling the energy potential of conventional gas, and supplies eight (8) percent of customers’ usage, which decreases reliance on fossil fuels.

In order to impact the environment further by helping reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, Integrys Energy Services has partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation.

For every new enrollment in the Ecovations program, a tree will be planted in one of our nation’s forests.

Businesses and other commercial gas users enrolled in an Ecovations Renewable Gas program may claim “carbon offsets” as a benefit of purchasing biogas through Integrys Energy Services.

Carbon offsets are credits for releasing less carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.

As more companies and government offices require limits on carbon dioxide emissions, carbon offsets are becoming attractive options for businesses to show their positive impact.
