New Employee Safety Orientation Video
The Grain and Feed Association of Illinois (GFAI), Springfield, IL, is working to make elevators safer with its new Grain Elevator Safety Orientation Video.
The video is geared toward making elevator employees more aware of safety issues, says John Lee, director, safety, health, environmental services, GFAI.
Due to employee turnover, theres little time to fully train them. This video is designed to show employees what to do and not to do.
The 14-minute video comes with a 20- to 25-page illustrated book and pre- and post-video quizzes for employees.
Topics covered include:
Safely dumping trucksstraight, tandem, semi, gravity wagons.
 Cleaning around dumps.
Explosionscauses, preventing them, the four factors needed for an explosion. GFAI used an explosion chamber to simulate grain dust explosions.
Emergency exit plansgetting down, where to go in an emergency.
Bin entryavoiding suffocation, recognizing dangers. GFAI used a suffocation simulator to demonstrate the dangers of entering grain bins.
Ladder safetythe 4-to-1 rule (for every 4 feet the ladder height increases, move the base out 1 foot).
 Electrical safety.
 Equipment safetylockout/tagout, guards/covers.
