Partners for Protection...Firefighting Video

When it comes to fighting fires at grain handling facilities, a great deal of planning and training are required both for elevator management and employees and for local fire departments.

Thats the central theme of Partners for Protection, a 20-minute, 1988 video produced and distributed by the National Grain and Feed Association (202-289-0873/www. ngfa.org).

The 1988 video was shown in August as part of a Safety and Regulatory Conference sponsored by the Kansas Grain and Feed Association in Salina, KS.

Seven Steps

The video outlines seven steps for elevator employees to take once a fire is discovered:

1. Notify the elevators managers of the fire, and provide as much detail as possible.

2. Sound the alarm, and always notify the local fire department, no matter how small the fire.

3. Evacuate the facility according to its Emergency Action Plan.

4. Pinpoint the location of the fire.

5. Shut down all equipment in the area, and cut off the power.

6. If the fire is small, eradicate it with fire extinguishers that should be in place and regularly serviced.

7. If the fire is out of control, leave the area immediately. Let the professionals handle it.

The video and an accompanying manual provides guidance on how to develop emergency action plans, an OSHA requirement. It also is an excellent resource for educating local fire departments about firefighting challenges unique to grain, feed, and processing facilities.

The video and manual are available from NGFA for $50 for NGFA member companies and $95 for nonmembers.
