Date Posted: August 26, 2014

The National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium (NAFTC)will conduct the 7th installment of the nation’s largest alternative fuel vehicle event, National Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) Day Odyssey, on October 17, 2014.

The NAFTC is a nationwide program founded in 1992 to promote clean energy options for transportation through AFV education.

Based at West Virginia University, the NAFTC and its more than 50 consortium member schools from Maine to California remains the only nationwide alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicle training organization in the United States.

Odyssey, created in 2002 by the NAFTC, is a biennial, nationwide celebration to promote the use of and educate the public on alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles.

Since its inception, Odyssey has reached more than 400 million individuals through event attendance and media reach.

National AFV Day Odyssey 2014 is poised to be more successful than ever, forging the way with the slogan of “Driving toward a clean, secure energy future.”

With numerous events conducted nationwide with the same focus, Odyssey continues to reach Americans from the East Coast to the West Coast with vital information about green transportation options.

NAFTC Assistant Director – Communications and Outreach and National Odyssey Coordinator Judy Moore commented, “Odyssey is one of the NAFTC’s most recognized programs and has an incredible reputation in the alternative fuel vehicle industry. Odyssey does more than attract large numbers of people—it also makes the public aware of the viability of alternative fuel vehicles in their lives.”

The National Odyssey Kickoff Event is set to take place on the National Mall in Washington, DC, October 17. The Kickoff serves as the heart of the more than 100 events taking place across America on the same day.

Thousands will join governmental agencies, environmental organizations, businesses, universities, community colleges, and secondary schools across the nation for local Odyssey events.

The Greater Washington Region Clean Cities Coalition will serve as co-host for the Kickoff Event.

Moore explains, “The National Mall is the ideal stage to host the National Kickoff Event. We anticipate thousands of consumers and visitors from across the U.S. and around the world, in addition to government officials, will take advantage of the opportunity to see these vehicles up close and ask questions about how they work and where they can be purchased.”

Odyssey has again attracted the support of industry giants, such as American Honda Motor Co. and the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC), who are sponsoring the 2014 event.

National partners for the event include the U.S. Department of Energy Clean Cities Program, the U.S. National Park Service, the Smithsonian Institution, and AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC).
